Peter Saville, sex, and design – whew!

by Dave Brown on July 24th, 2009

I make it a regular practice to scan the latest design magazines.  One of my faves is Wallpaper. I was overjoyed to see the July issue – the front cover of which promised a smorgasbord of tantalizing visuals and compelling content – where sex meets design.

Finding this incredible work in such a mainstream magazine is incredibly inspiring.  The things that Saville and his project partner Nick Knight say about this concept perfectly capture an important precept behind MIUZU. In Nick Knight’s words:

“You’re not just producing objects to be a part of your sex life, you’re actually sexualizing the whole of your environment.”

Some of the furnishings portrayed are quite scandalous.  I’ve held for a long time that fetish is too marginal and intimidating (dare I say unappetizing?) for most people.  That said, in the context of impeccably good taste, it can take on a very different erotic flavour.  Needless to say, I welcome feedback from anyone who cares to comment!

Please do follow the link to SHOWstudio.  The content there is delicious, intelligent, and plentiful.  While you’re at it, look around youtube for Peter Saville interviews.  The guy is a genius, and is notable for some monumental work in graphic design for pop music.  It’s fair to say that most designers worth their weight have been influenced by him.

Bonus points to anyone who knows him and adds some thoughts at the end of this post.  I’ll end it for now, but will most likely come back later to augment this entry.

  • technology is definitely sexy here
  • This is a simple presentation. Geometric forms. Wery good.

We we see the play of colors, a simple design. black, white, black, white, black, white.
Next are forms. Two circle white and black. Alternately. The Intersect monotony. Elements to reduce the scale of.
ftter that are details. Like woman and man. Characteriscic postures, woman like synthetic (stimulates imagination), man...typical.
And wery hard scene on a mirror, This picture gives a whole spice.
These geometric forms suggest that we are in the house which creates an atmosphere. The left part of the prospect of closing. (closing this prospect..?)
and...contrasting colours. A circle are sexy symbols, (alleviate suffering ) woman's shocks,
These elements attract us behaviourally, becouse we coding a symbols.
Good design is based on symbols and their accompanying emotions.
In addition, there is ART ...

    yes interesting.
  • Hi Dave, i watch the blog.
For me is not sexy this scene, this is "technodesign" and more sexual widgets. I don't like it.

“You’re not just producing objects to be a part of your sex life, you’re actually sexualizing the whole of your environment.”

    I don't think so.

I like atmpsphere, hot and innuendo, imaginations. This project is like sado/maso, exacly like my proposition 5b (green sofa). or number 9! Love parade..or.. This is the same associations.

Becouse the colours white, and pink, are the COLD for perceptions, add Black Sky...! Done. We have the good cinema Porno!. This is not erotica. This is a becoming porno!. They contrasts are provocation!

I like Peter Saville he is pervers designer :) but he is ART too!
    I like Reem Koolchas too.

The kitty woman? The naked models in pink feathers boa? This is bad, bad, bad, sex. :)

Do You have Miuzu be like that?

I'm sure, my concept sexual places are so nice and beauty and shows erotic climate.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm This Peter's concept to connect 4 passwords: "sex perverse" and "design" and "abstract" and furniture. Good is that the reception is clear but according to the individual emotions. The some items.

The customers must be openned to sex game! If you like that style.....(referring to a conversation).

I writed to you, we are smart and inteligent people.

But, ewerything is a challenge, I hope that many people love MIUZO.;))
Funny or seriously furnitures together with more sexi games, funny or seriously. (???) Like Peter's vision?

    Regards, Marlene. ( from Poland..)
  • Marlena! Excellent counterpoints. That deserves a considered response. I don't have time for one right now.

Suffice to say that there is some SHOCK in this photo-assemblage. It's Wallpaper magazine. The nuances of the color treatments and the objects used in the shoot, to me, are less significant than the idea that we're seeing this kind of eroticism in a mainstream publication.

I do admire your perspective, and in some regards my tastes agree. I do know, however, that erotic taste varies wildly from one person to the next, once the facade is truly pulled back. So I welcome the introduction of intelligent dialogue on it, especially when it's creative leaders like Knight and Saville.

I'm compelled to say so much more. But... this is part of the beginning, rather than the end!

    Dave
